voila, it worked ! The SteamVR launcher reappeared in my Oculus Library and opens straight into the Steam home room. I'm on a laptop and I usually use a much larger external screen via the HMDI cable. I wasn't terribly hopeful, but I decided to start with disconnecting the external monitor.
#Overcooked! 2 steam stuck on loading update
Then Oculus support responded with a bunch of suggestions : make sure all Windows updates are installed (including optional ones), update the graphics card driver, enrol in the public test channel, and disconnect all external devices (monitors, external keyboards etc.). I spent pretty much all of Saturday trying everything I could and getting nowhere. but a very annoying one since I bought a bunch of new games there yesterday ! Not sure I want to try uninstalling the Oculus software in case that break too. The Oculus apps (Rift and Quest) work just fine, it's only Steam that's a problem. I posted a Steam support ticket earlier, but I was hoping someone here might also have some clever ideas. I'm wondering if this is a problem with Steam itself. Starting SteamVR now brings up the "room setup" screen, but it can't find the headset (even though the system report says it can), so I can't get past the first screen.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling SteamVR and Steam itself, but all that did was remove SteamVR from the Oculus screen. Then I stopped being able to run SteamVR in the Oculus app - running it showed the SteamVR loading screen, but it would either get stuck there for a few minutes (normally it loads in seconds) or disappear and send me back to the Oculus screen. I've been using Oculus Link with Quest and until this morning it was working perfectly.
